Position Overview

Escanaba Area Public Schools is seeking a skilled and dependable  School Bus Diesel Mechanic to join our transportation team. This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and inspecting district school buses and support vehicles to ensure the  safe and reliable transportation of students.

The ideal candidate has experience with  diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and preventative maintenance , along with a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair  diesel and gasoline engines , transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Perform  preventative maintenance on school buses and district vehicles according to established schedules
  • Maintain  accurate service records and ensure compliance with  state and federal transportation safety standards
  • Conduct  state-mandated safety inspections and prepare buses for annual inspections
  • Troubleshoot and repair  heating, cooling, and electrical systems
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Assist in  road calls and emergency repairs when necessary
  • Work collaboratively with transportation staff and supervisors to ensure the district fleet operates safely and efficiently

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (required)

  Experience in diesel or automotive repair (school bus or fleet maintenance preferred)
Working knowledge of  diesel engines, hydraulics, air brakes, and electrical systems
Ability to  diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using modern diagnostic tools
Must possess or be able to obtain a  Michigan CDL with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements
Must meet  Michigan Department of Education and DOT physical and safety requirements
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in varying weather conditions
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
