Chief Quality Officer

Lakewood, WA

The Gage Center of Forensic Excellence at Western State Hospital (WSH) is seeking a Chief Quality Officer to join the team. The role supports the mission of promoting recovery and wellbeing through senior leadership of clinical risk management, data management, safety, quality, compliance, and performance improvement across the Gage Center of Excellence.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) & Safety programs in accordance with Washington state regulations, CMS, The Joint Commission, BHHA, and other accrediting agencies.
• Ensure QAPI & Safety are fully integrated throughout the hospital.
• Control the clinical risk management department, ensuring compliance with hospital and regulatory standards, and lead root cause analyses.
• Collaborate with administration, clinicians, hospital departments, and external stakeholders to maintain mission alignment and program effectiveness.
• Guarantee data integrity and oversee the Research, Evaluation, & Data Analysis department.
• Coordinate and monitor all survey activities, including Labor & Industries (L&I), Department of Health, and other regulatory entities.
• Ensure survey readiness hospitalwide.
• Serve as cochair for the Quality Council, focusing on tracking, trending, analyzing, and improving performance measures aligned with QAPI certification requirements.
• Annually assess QAPI & Safety Plans and ensure facility goals and procedures meet accreditation standards.
• Set performance standards, assess achievement, and increase workunit productivity while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws.

Qualifications

• Expertise in LEAN principles, healthcare performance improvement, and project management.
• Proficiency with systematic comprehensive analysis and LEAN tools.
• Knowledge of occupational health safety and L&I/DOSH requirements.
• Experience leading risk management, data management, and safety programs.
• Extensive knowledge of QAPI planning, program implementation, and compliance.
• Ability to thrive in a teamoriented, fastpaced environment with multitasking.
• Positivity and passion for improving patient care and processes.
• Comfort presenting to large audiences and headquarters leadership.
• Knowledge of DSHS policies and related state administrative codes/RCWs.
• Strong judgment and professional knowledge for complex situations and managing priorities.
• Understanding of the hospitals continuum of care within broader healthcare reform.
• Demonstrated leadership/management skills and supervisory experience.
• Capability to translate complex standards to functional language for all job classifications.
• Experience analyzing state and federal legislation.
• Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) certification.

Who Should Apply

Professionals with a bachelors or higher in nursing, social science, healthcare administration, business administration, public health or related behavioral health science who have at least six years of supervisory and management experience in a healthcare leadership role and working knowledge of accreditation standards and CMS Conditions of Participation.
